Revival.
Goodwood is always one of the most special car events of the year, and it was great to come back for another year, this time with a lot of rain to boot.
Nikon FM3a + Kentmere 400 +2 Stops.
Going to Goodwood this year was a great opportunity to try a new lens I had just purchased, the Nikkor AF-D 70-210mm f/4-5.6 for my FM3a. By no means was this the most proficient or technical lens out there, but given I was already shooting Kentmere at 1600 ISO, I wasn't desperate for f2.8 all the time. Having this lens was great for getting some close ups of cars on the track, and was a nice change of pace for myself, given that normally I pretty much always shoot at the 35mm focal length.
Kentmere 400 is a stock I've been shooting a ton of recently. I think it kind of sucks at box speed, but when you push it 2 stops to 1600 it becomes a stock that I genuinely can't think of a scenario I could use it in. Not only did the push give these shots a nice bit of contrast and texture thanks to the extra grain, but it really was helpful for maintaining a high shutter speed for the cars going round the track. Even though it got pretty dark I managed to stay above 1/800 most of the time. It was definitely the right choice using it...
The 70-210mm definitely worked well here. I bought a Nikon F5 like the day after Revival, and I honestly don't know why I didn't just buy one sooner as I think a lot of these shots would've been way easier to get with an autofocus camera instead of relying on pre-focusing every single shot. Smart thinking.
It was so amazing seeing all of these cars be used the way they were intended to. You these photos could've been taken 50 or 60 yeatrs ago and I would've believed you - they definitely capture the look I was going for.
There were some truly amazing sights in the paddock. It was such a delight being able to see these amazing machines up close while they were being worked on and were getting ready to go out for their races.
Overall I'm very happy with my photos from Revival this year. Next year I'd love to go for multiple days and potentially get some different angles of the track shots with the Nikon F5. Looking forward to it...
